Ayurveda - ancient practice and its modern applications

Ayurveda originated in India as a system of traditional medicine and has proved to be very useful since then. Gaining education and pursuing career in the field of ayurveda have innumerable benefits; as the modern world seems to have recognised the power of ayurveda. Ayurveda has gained a lot of popularity all over the world lately. It also involves the benefits massage therapy and yoga. Ayurveda lays stress on the three energies namely vatta [air], pitta [bile] and kapha [phlegm].

There are eight major disciplines in ayurveda the names of which are the following

  •  Internal medicine-kaya chikitsa
  • Surgery-shalya chikitsa
  • Paediatrics-kaumarabhrtyam
  • Demonic possession-bhuta vidya
  • Treatment of diseases above the clavicle-salakyam
  • Toxicology-agadatantram
  • Prevention of diseases and rejuvenation-rasayana

Eligibility to become an Ayurvedic Practitioner

Eligibility criteria required to enter the world of ayurveda is higher secondary examination from a recognised board or school with Sanskrit as one of the main subjects.

  • Minimum age of the candidate should be 17 years.
  • A person can also join the B.A.M.S. course which is the bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery, if he/she has passed the 10+2 examination with subjects like physics, chemistry, biology and Sanskrit.
  • C.B.S.E. conducts an entrance exam named as All India Pre-Medical/Pre Dental exam
  • The candidates who pass the B.A.M.S. can opt for post graduation gradually.
  • Duration of various courses vary from institute to institute. For example some institutes offer certificate courses, the duration of which is 1-2 years. The duration for the B.A.M.S. course is five and a half years to six and a half years depending upon the period of internship. Almost all the medical colleges in India provide specialisation in the ayurvedic science but there are some special government institutes set up to encourage the practice of ayurveda.

Scope and Job Prospects

There are a lot of prospects unwrapping for a student educated and trained in the science of Ayurveda. Once completing appropriate education an Ayurvedic science aspirant can seek employment in following ways--

  • As an Ayurvedic practitioner- one can open his own spa and massage centre which is amongst the hottest occupation these days. This is a single most popular business which not only provides refreshment and rejuvenation to its clients but also offer remedies for physical ailments and psychological problems like stress, depression etc.
  • In all the government and private hospitals, students trained in the field of ayurveda have great scope for employment. 
  • One can open his/her own retail shop of ayurvedic medicines, soaps, oils, spa treatments, bath salts etc.
  • One can also find employment as a teacher of Ayurvedic concepts in medical colleges where ayurveda is being taught as a separate subject.

In nutshell, the present environment which is full of stress requires the services of well qualified ayurvedic practitioners to detoxify negativity and live life to fullest.
