Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system and blends in other disciplines like neuro-psychology amongst other disciplines. Strictly speaking, neuroscience has always been seen as a branch of biology.
Courses
Since neuroscience is a highly advanced and specialized course, it is only offered by a select few colleges and institutions in India. Another important thing to note is the fact that only a couple of seats for neuroscience are available all over India and there is a severe shortage of seats that restricts admissions to this program. Currently, there are two programs available, MS (Master of Science) Neurology and a Ph.D in Neurology. The MS (Neuroscience) program is of a 2 year duration.
Eligibility
The minimum basic qualifications required for enrolment into MS (Neuroscience) is a bachelors in science in any of the following disciplines: B.Sc. allied Health Sciences / Botany/Chemistry/ BUMS/ Biochemistry as main or ancillary/ B.Sc. in Life Sciences/ Bio Science/ Biology/ Physics/BSMS/ BAMS/ BHMS/ B.Sc. Nursing /B.S. Physician Assistant / BPTH/Bachelor of Occupational Theory (BOT) /Zoology/any Biological Sciences or Professional course such as MBBS.
Prospects
Since neurology is a specialized field, there is a dearth of qualified personnel primarily due to the fact that not many colleges offer MS (Neuroscience) as a program and those that do have limited seats therefore limiting the scope of matching supply to the current demand. However, successful candidates can find extremely lucrative employment in government and private hospitals, research laboratories, scan and diagnostic centres or can choose to be consultants to hospitals as well.
