The Scholastic aptitude test or the Scholastic assessment test also known as the SAT test is the mandatory test that needs to be taken by students for admission into bachelor's programmes in colleges of the United States of America. This test is administered by the College Board of USA. This is a test that students in India must take if they want to pursue education aboard.
SAT Exam Details
The SAT exam was earlier divided into two parts known as the SAT I which is the reasoning test and the SAT II which is the subject tests. They are now known as SAT reasoning tests and the SAT subject tests. The SAT scores are reported in the scale ranging from 200 to 800.
SAT Exam Reasoning Test
The SAT Reasoning test is held seven times in a year in Puerto Rico, US Territories and US itself. This test is held six times a year overseas. This test is a measure of the analytical and thinking skills that is required for academic success in a college. The reasoning test is conducted for duration of three hours and forty five minutes. The students are evaluated with questions in around ten sections. There are different writing scores for multiple choice and essay questions. Questions are broadly based on topics like critical reading, mathematics and writing. These details are required as several colleges rank students on overall performance taking into consideration their recommendations, essays, school records, interviews and extracurricular activities.
SAT Subject Test
The SAT subject test as the name suggests are primarily multiple choice questions in specific subjects. Some of the subjects include Writing, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, World History, Literature and much more. The subject tests last only for an hour and determine the measure of knowledge of a student in a particular subject.
Rules of the Test for SAT Exam
All students taking the SAT reasoning test are provided a break after one hour of tests. Students cannot revisit the earlier sections after the break to work on some more questions. They are required to work the current section only. In case the students finish the test early, they are not allowed to start off with the next section unless instructed by the testing supervisor.
Eligibility for SAT Exam
To be eligible for the SAT exam, students should have completed 12 years of school education from a recognized Indian university or education board. However, apart from the SAT scores, the students might be required to take up further tests like personality tests, essay writing and much more depending on the specific institutes. The scores that are finally considered are dependant on the colleges applied for. Some colleges consider the mathematics and verbal scores. Students can reappear for the tests; however this action is meaningless if higher scores are not expected.
Application forms for SAT Exam
The SAT forms can be availed from the College Board, or from USEFI offices. For students in India, Online registration is the easiest way to apply for SAT. The forms can be downloaded online and a credit card payment can be made towards the examination fees. The SAT fees in India are $85 for the reasoning tests and $69.50 for the subject tests.
